Abovian’s Family Fled Armenia as Refugees

Ellina Abovian was born to her parents, who fled the country as refugees when she was just a year old. Before going to America, her family stopped in Italy for some time.

When they reached Hollywood, it was a huge cultural shock to them. Nothing was like their country, and her family didn’t speak the language. Further, they didn’t even know anyone there.

A month after they arrived in the U.S., her fortunate family moved to Glendale, which had an Armenian population. The people from their community helped them feel homely and could easily transition into their American lives.

The reporter’s father and mother are the real MVP of her life. Her parents are both Armenian and Russian, and they sacrificed and gave up everything to move the journalist and her brother towards a brighter future.
