Moving towards her educational background, Heather McGhee graduated from Yale University in 2001 with a Bachelor of Arts degree after finishing her high school education at Milton Academy in Milton, Massachusetts. She was one of just a few black students in the whole school.

Heather McGhee began her career in 2007 as Deputy Policy Director for John Edwards for President. The following year, she joined Demos: Ideas & Action as Conference Director for four months.
McGhee returned to Demos in 2009 and co-chaired a task group with Americans for Financial Reform that helped design the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. In 2014, McGhee was appointed president of Demos.
She stood aside as president in early 2018. However, she remained a distinguished senior fellow at Demos. In December 2019, McGhee was appointed head of Color of Change’s board of directors. McGhee started “The Sum of Us Podcast” in July 2022, expanding on her book of the same name.
